Suspected Lioness Roams Berlin Suburbs, Prompting Warnings and Search

Authorities in Germany have issued warnings for residents in Berlin's southern suburbs due to a potentially dangerous animal, believed to be a lioness, on the loose. Early Thursday morning, Brandenburg state police alerted the public about an "escaped wild animal" and advised people in Kleinmachnow, Teltow, and Stahnsdorf, as well as parts of southern Berlin, to stay indoors and keep pets inside. An official warning via a mobile app later specified the animal was suspected to be a lioness.

A search operation involving a veterinarian, two hunters, and helicopters is underway. Police are currently unsure of the animal's owner. According to police spokesperson Daniel Keip, two individuals reported witnessing a large cat pursuing a wild boar, a common sight in the Berlin area. They captured a video, which law enforcement officials confirmed appeared to show a lioness. Multiple sightings have been reported.

Checks with Berlin's two zoos, along with local circuses and animal shelters, have revealed no missing lionesses. Police have increased their presence in Kleinmachnow, issuing warnings via loudspeaker, although no official lockdown order has been given. Daily life continues in the town, with residents seen walking dogs and cycling. Daycare centers remain open, but children are being kept indoors. The town hall is also open, but market traders have been advised against setting up their stalls.
