Stallone Withdraws Controversial Underwater Barrier Plan After Neighbor Backlash

Actor Sylvester Stallone has reversed his decision to construct an underwater barrier near his Palm Beach mansion following strong opposition from his neighbors. The "Rocky" star had initially proposed the barrier, claiming it was an environmental project designed to prevent debris and seaweed from accumulating near his $35 million waterfront property. However, neighbors and local officials expressed concerns about the barrier's potential impact on marine life, water quality, and boating safety.

During a Palm Beach Town Council meeting, Stallone, accompanied by his wife Jennifer Flavin, attempted to defend the project, asserting it wasn't merely a "vanity thing." He emphasized his respect for his neighbors and their concerns. However, his plea was met with skepticism and further opposition. A former U.S. Army major general argued that the barrier posed a safety hazard to boaters, while another resident claimed it would exacerbate the debris problem by trapping it further down the waterway.

Council President Bobbie Lindsay acknowledged the difficulty of being a celebrity under such scrutiny and ultimately advised against approving the application. She encouraged Stallone to collaborate with the council to address the waterway's environmental challenges through alternative means. Stallone subsequently agreed to withdraw his application.

The proposed barrier, intended for the Intracoastal Waterway, had raised concerns among neighbors who claimed they were not properly informed about the project. An Army Corps public notice suggested the primary purpose of the barrier was to deter boaters from approaching Stallone's property, with seaweed listed as a secondary concern.

Stallone's application also included a request to lease state-owned land where the barrier would be positioned. The application, submitted in January 2023, was received by the Army Corps in August, followed by a month-long public comment period starting in October. Concerns were raised about potential harm to manatees and seagrasses.

Stallone purchased the sprawling Palm Beach estate in 2021. The property boasts over 13,000 square feet of living space, including a main house, guest house, and pool pavilion, situated on 1.5 lakefront acres with 250 feet of beachfront and a dock.
