Shelby 'Dragonsnake' Cobra Returns: A Legendary Sports Car Reborn

The iconic 1960s Shelby "Dragonsnake" Cobra, a dominant force in drag racing, is back. Originally designed for the quarter-mile, this V8-powered roadster achieved remarkable success in the 1960s, securing numerous victories, including prestigious titles at the U.S. Nationals and World Championship.

Shelby American, in collaboration with Legendary GT, a Pennsylvania-based builder of certified "continuation" Cobras, has revived this legendary vehicle. These continuation cars adhere to the original specifications and are recognized as "new" vehicles.

The initial continuation Cobra mirrors the aesthetics of the original Dragonsnake race car. Five new vehicles will be built, each featuring an authentic tube frame chassis and aluminum body, staying true to the original design.

The first car off the production line boasts the distinctive purple paint and graphics of Bruce Larson's original Dragonsnake, a vehicle renowned for its numerous victories. Larson's significant contributions to Shelby's legacy were acknowledged through consultations during the car's development to ensure its authenticity.

Under the hood, the 2,100-pound Cobra packs a powerful punch with a 364-cubic-inch Shelby Engine Company Ford-based V8, featuring classic Weber carburetors and generating 500 hp. This power is channeled to the rear Mickey Thompson drag slicks via a modern five-speed manual transmission.

While retaining the original suspension design, the new Dragonsnake incorporates adjustable Penske shocks, rack and pinion steering, and 1963-style disc brakes. A hardtop, similar to Larson's car, enhances aerodynamics.

With a starting price of $750,000, the Dragonsnake Cobra commands a premium. However, this is less than the value of an original model, with a 1965 yellow Dragonsnake fetching $1,375,000 at auction in 2022. Each new car requires approximately a year to build, and a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Carroll Shelby Foundation, supporting children with life-threatening illnesses.
