Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway: A NASCAR Revival in the Making?

The allure of Music City extends beyond its vibrant music scene, drawing NASCAR enthusiasts who often linger in Nashville for days after races at the nearby Nashville Superspeedway. However, a strong push is underway to bring NASCAR back to its historical roots within the city: the Fairgrounds Speedway.

This historic track, dating back to 1904, holds a significant place in motorsports history. Jerry Caldwell, president of Bristol Motor Speedway, emphasizes the importance of embracing Nashville's racing heritage, highlighting the Fairgrounds' unique position in the city's identity. Despite a city charter mandating racing at the site, the Fairgrounds has been somewhat neglected since NASCAR's last Cup Series race there in 1984.

Numerous racing legends, from Hall of Famers like Darrell Waltrip and Dale Earnhardt Jr. to current stars like Chase Elliott, Martin Truex Jr., and Zane Smith, champion the track's return to the NASCAR circuit. Waltrip praises it as the "best short track in the country," requiring upgrades to restore it to its former glory. Elliott, a vocal advocate for the Fairgrounds, believes it would be a premier stop on the NASCAR schedule.

Revitalizing the Fairgrounds Speedway presents financial hurdles. A study indicated nearly $42 million is needed for safety and operational improvements. Basic infrastructure, like electricity, has required significant investment. A renovation deal signed with Speedway Motorsports, owner of both the superspeedway and Bristol Motor Speedway, aims to address these issues. The plan includes repaving, tunnel expansion, sound barriers, and safety upgrades to meet current NASCAR standards.

The proposal faces scrutiny, particularly regarding its proximity to GEODIS Park, home to Nashville's MLS team. Concerns about two large venues so close together have been raised. However, proponents argue that public support is strong for shifting the track's upkeep costs to its users. The deal's approval by the Nashville City Council is crucial, with a new council taking seats later this year.

With Nashville's growing prominence in motorsports, including hosting the NASCAR awards banquet since 2019, the potential for two NASCAR races in the market is being explored. While the Nashville Superspeedway has established its place, the Fairgrounds Speedway represents a return to tradition and a chance to revitalize a historic venue.
