Over the Fourth of July weekend, two separate shark attacks occurred off the coast of New York, leaving two men in their 40s injured. The first incident involved a 47-year-old man who sustained severe lacerations to his right knee while in chest-deep water at Quogue Village. Although the man didn't see the shark, authorities believe a "larger marine animal" was responsible. Shortly after, a 49-year-old man was bitten on the hand near Fire Island Pines. Fortunately, both men are expected to recover.
These incidents follow another shark attack on Monday, where a 15-year-old surfer was bitten on the heel and toes at Kismet Beach on Fire Island. The teenager's injuries were also non-life-threatening.
Experts suggest that the increased presence of bunker fish and rising ocean temperatures may be contributing to the surge in shark activity closer to shore. George Gorman, a regional director with New York State Parks, commented that this might be the "new normal" and emphasized the need for ongoing monitoring and vigilance.
