The Sun Belt Conference has imposed a $100,000 penalty on Marshall University for their decision to withdraw from the Independence Bowl last December. The move left the conference scrambling to find a replacement, ultimately leading to Louisiana Tech's participation and subsequent loss to Army.
The Sun Belt expressed its disappointment in a statement, highlighting the negative impact Marshall's last-minute withdrawal had on the conference, its members, Army, the bowl organizers, the American Athletic Conference, and ESPN. While acknowledging Marshall's concerns regarding player health and safety, the conference emphasized the detrimental timing and nature of the decision.

Marshall Athletic Director Christian Spears defended the university's choice, reiterating their commitment to prioritizing student-athlete well-being. He acknowledged the inconvenience caused and offered a formal apology.

Marshall's impressive 10-3 regular season, culminating in a seven-game winning streak and a Sun Belt championship, was overshadowed by the subsequent events. Head Coach Charles Huff's departure, stemming from contract disagreements with the university, further complicated the situation. The coaching change triggered a wave of player transfers, ultimately leading to the team's withdrawal from the bowl game.

Huff subsequently accepted the head coaching position at Southern Miss. Marshall has since appointed NC State's offensive coordinator, Tony Gibson, as their new head coach.
