Following former President Donald Trump's online criticism of Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds, a Republican state senator has switched his endorsement to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. Sen. Jeff Reichman, currently in his first term, expressed his disapproval of Trump's attack on the popular governor. He stated that while Trump's outspoken nature is expected, targeting Gov. Reynolds crossed a line, prompting him to withdraw his support.
Reichman emphasized his loyalty to Gov. Reynolds, describing her as "like family." This close relationship influenced his decision to endorse DeSantis for the 2024 presidential race. The senator's shift in allegiance highlights the impact of Trump's remarks on the political landscape in Iowa.

Trump's criticism centered on Gov. Reynolds' neutrality in the 2024 GOP presidential primary. He claimed credit for boosting her political career, stating he "opened up" the gubernatorial position for her and endorsed her during a challenging election. He also mentioned not inviting her to events. In contrast, DeSantis praised Reynolds as a "strong leader" capable of achieving results, predicting further success for her in the special session.

Other prominent figures also weighed in. Former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson condemned Trump's actions as "dictatorial," while former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley lauded Reynolds as a "conservative rock star." Despite remaining neutral, Gov. Reynolds has welcomed several presidential candidates to Iowa, including former Vice President Mike Pence and Senator Tim Scott. Her involvement with Casey DeSantis' "Mamas for DeSantis" campaign further underscores the complex dynamics of the 2024 race.

The DeSantis campaign announced endorsements from two more Iowa representatives, bringing the total number of state lawmaker endorsements to 39, according to a DeSantis campaign press release. This development, along with Reichman's withdrawn endorsement, signifies the ongoing shifts in political support as the 2024 election approaches.
