Before enchanting audiences as the voice of Disney's Moana, Auli'i Cravalho's life was marked by humility and hardship. The now 24-year-old actress recently shared her inspiring story with People magazine, reflecting on her journey from a one-bedroom apartment in Oahu to Hollywood success.
Cravalho and her mother, Puanani, relied on food stamps and shared a cramped living space, with Cravalho sleeping in the bedroom and her mother on the couch. "She gave me everything," Cravalho expressed, highlighting her mother's unwavering support. The success of "Moana" allowed Cravalho to give back, purchasing a house for her now-retired mother. "Your parents give you so much," she acknowledged, emphasizing the gratitude she feels for her parents' sacrifices.
Raised on The Big Island and Oahu, Cravalho's life transformed drastically after landing the lead role in the 2016 animated film. Despite the sudden fame, her parents instilled a sense of groundedness, reminding her of the importance of education and everyday responsibilities. "My parents were like, ‘Listen, if ["Moana"] doesn't go anywhere, you need to finish high school. You need to do the dishes. You need to fix your bed. Don't let it get to your head,’" she recounted.
The instant recognition that followed the film's release was overwhelming, with everyone, including teachers, referring to her as "Moana." While acknowledging the profound impact the role had on her career, Cravalho also expressed a continued connection to the character, particularly in missing her family during periods of absence. She reflected on the demanding nature of being a "Disney kid," describing it as pouring all one's energy into a project, often leaving little for oneself.
Cravalho credited her mother's discipline and support for helping her navigate the challenges of early stardom. These experiences taught her the importance of self-preservation and setting boundaries, ultimately shaping her into the successful and grounded individual she is today.
