TMZ initially reported that Spears was "backhanded" by Wembanyama's security, later identified as Damian Smith, the Spurs' director of team security. The outlet later updated its report, citing alleged security footage showing Smith pushing Spears' hand away, leading to her hand hitting her own face.
Law enforcement sources reportedly told TMZ the incident is being treated as a criminal investigation. Neither Wembanyama, the Spurs, nor Spears' representatives have publicly commented on the matter.
Wembanyama, the highly anticipated number one pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, is in Las Vegas for the NBA Summer League. His debut with the Spurs is scheduled for Friday night against the Charlotte Hornets, a game that is reportedly sold out.
