A tragic incident unfolded on Monday morning, claiming the life of a dedicated Alabama police lieutenant. Lt. Mark Meadows, 60, was performing traffic duty outside the Church of the Highlands' main campus when he was struck by a vehicle. The driver, operating a Chevrolet Colorado, immediately stopped after the collision.
The accident occurred shortly before 7 a.m. as the church's "21 Days of Prayer" event was concluding. Meadows was transported to Grandview Medical Center but sadly succumbed to his injuries. Irondale Mayor James Stewart Jr. expressed his deep sorrow, referring to Meadows as a "treasured member" of the city's family and praising his exemplary service and dedication.

The Irondale Police Department is offering grief support to its officers and staff in the wake of this devastating loss. Meadows, an Army veteran, had a long and distinguished career in law enforcement. Church of the Highlands lead pastor Chris Hodges shared that Meadows had been a familiar presence at the church since its Grants Mill campus opened nearly two decades ago. Hodges expressed heartfelt condolences, describing Meadows as a beloved member of the church community.

Alabama Governor Kay Ivey conveyed her sympathies to Meadows' family and the community, highlighting his service as both a police officer and a veteran. Senator Tommy Tuberville also expressed his condolences and gratitude for Meadows' dedicated service to the state and nation.

Meadows began his career in law enforcement in 1992 with the Mountain Brook Police Department before joining the Irondale force. He was a certified firearms instructor with both the FBI and the NRA. He is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragic accident.
