Forrest's extensive career spanned decades, encompassing nearly 100 roles in film and television. He is perhaps most recognized for his portrayal of Jay "Chef" Hicks in the 1979 Vietnam War epic "Apocalypse Now," sharing the screen with iconic actors such as Martin Sheen, Marlon Brando, and Robert Duvall. The same year, his performance alongside Bette Midler in "The Rose" garnered him both Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations, solidifying his status as a versatile and talented actor. The National Society of Film Critics recognized his outstanding contributions by awarding him best supporting actor for both films.

Forrest's collaborations with director Francis Ford Coppola extended beyond "Apocalypse Now," including "One From The Heart" (1981) and "Tucker: The Man and His Dream" (1988). He also took on the role of the original captain in the television series "21 Jump Street" and appeared in films like "Falling Down" and Johnny Depp's "The Brave" (1997), showcasing his range and adaptability.
